WHAT ARE THE KEY OTC CATEGORIES NOW THAT SPRING & SUMMER IS HERE?

Back in the day when I sold OTC medications we were always amazed at the seasonality of our products once Spring and Summer started. Do you know what KEY OTC Categories sell in the summer months?

My Top 5 Key OTC Categories

1️⃣ Seasonal Allergies: Spring and summer often bring an increase in pollen and allergens.  Categories Needed: Antihistamines, Nasal sprays, and Eye drops (allergy/dry eye).

2️⃣ Sun Protection: Protect our skin from harmful UV rays during the summer. Categories Needed: Sunscreens/Lotions/After Sun protection are at the top but also complementary categories like hats and sunglasses should also be in the mix.

3️⃣ Insect Repellents: Outdoor activities may expose us to pesky insects. Categories Needed: Insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are at the top of this list.

4️⃣ First Aid Essentials: From minor cuts and burns to blisters and rashes, accidents can happen during summer adventures. Categories Needed: First Aid Kits, Adhesive bandages, Antiseptic creams, hydrocortisone creams, and soothing aloe vera gel.

5️⃣ Hydration and Electrolytes: Higher temperatures and increased physical activity can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Categories Needed: Electrolyte-rich drinks, Water, and others that replenish fluids and maintain proper hydration levels.

my pov on activating these categories

🔑OTC Medications, whether sold in a Drug, Mass, Club, or Grocery store have a key seasonal component.

🔑Displays, expanded distribution, and Shelf presence is STEP 1, but building a strategy to have Cross-Merchandising & Cross-Promotional with Complementary products is the bigger win.

🔑Shoppers ARE LOOKING FOR THESE PRODUCTS while shopping for other items at retail.

How are you going to Convert, Build the Basket, Trade up, and get them to COME BACK before the end of the season? And Will you be IN-STOCK?

Your shopper’s health and well-being are worth the extra care and attention. Contact us, if you want help to build next year’s Category Stories with analysis this season.
